About EarthMC Atlas Version 1.01 ยท testing phase

A community-made way to browse the EarthMC map: searchable, smoother, easier on the eyes. It is built to make the map nicer to use, not to give anyone an edge.

Unofficial

EarthMC Atlas is an independent fan project. It is not run, endorsed or approved by EarthMC, and it is not affiliated with Mojang or Microsoft. Minecraft is a trademark of Mojang Synergies AB. All map imagery, town and nation data, and player information belong to their original owners and come from EarthMC’s own public map and API.

Why it exists

The original map is great to look at, but the player list can refresh out from under you and there is no way to search. Atlas adds search for towns, nations and players, a browsable nation and online list, a home button, a friends list, smoother movement and a few display options. That is all it is for.

Fair play

The rule we build by: Atlas shows nothing you could not already see on EarthMC’s own map or public API. It only makes it easier to find and read.

What it does

  • Shows the same terrain tiles, town and nation borders the official map shows.
  • Shows the same live player positions the official map already publishes. The server itself decides who is visible (for example players under blocks stay hidden), and Atlas just relays that.
  • Looks up town, nation and player profiles through EarthMC’s public API.
  • Shows recent town and nation changes (founded, renamed, joined, dissolved) worked out by comparing the official map every few minutes, plus server status and public advancement records. Nothing about individual players.
  • Follows a visible player only while you choose to, and stops the moment you move the map yourself.

What it never does

  • No history, trails or movement tracking. The server keeps only the newest snapshot in memory for a few seconds and never writes positions to disk.
  • No revealing players the official map hides.
  • Nothing that needs special access on your side, and none of your data is ever sent to EarthMC. The person running this site may connect one personal API key of their own to receive EarthMC’s official event stream (New Day, town and nation events). That key stays on the server and is never shown to visitors. Shop and resident events are never requested.
  • No alerts, automation or gameplay hooks.
  • No accounts, cookies or ads, and no tracking of players. Visitors are counted anonymously. If you choose to give your Minecraft name on the welcome screen, that name and your visit dates are kept (details under “Your data”).

API opt-outs are respected. Players who used /api opt-out do not appear in profile lookups, the online list or friends, because those come straight from the API. If EarthMC changes what its map or API shows or hides, Atlas follows automatically, since it only passes that data along.

How fresh the data is

DataUp to
Live player positionsabout 3 seconds old
Online player listabout 20 seconds old
Player, town and nation profilesabout 1 minute old
Town and nation bordersabout 5 minutes old
Recent changes feedabout 5 minutes old
Map tilesabout 10 minutes old

Requests go through a small caching server so many visitors do not multiply the load on EarthMC, and it stays well below the API’s rate limit. Player heads are fetched once by the server from mc-heads.net and cached, so your browser does not contact third parties.

Your data

Your settings, friends list, home, your Minecraft name and last map position are stored only in your own browser (local storage). There is no account and nothing is sent to be saved on a server. When you add a friend or look someone up, that name is sent to EarthMC’s public API through the caching server to fetch their public profile. You can wipe everything at any time with Clear my data in the Me tab of the menu.

Why anything is counted. The site is being tested. Counting exists purely to monitor how the map is used and how much load the server is under, and it is not used for anything else.

To count how many people use the map, the server tells visitors apart with a scrambled fingerprint (a one-way hash of a random key, the connection address and the browser name). Fingerprints are kept only in memory for an hour, the key is replaced every day and never saved, and only totals such as “visitors today” are written to disk. Nothing that could identify a person is stored, and search engines and monitoring bots are not counted.

If you give your Minecraft username. The welcome screen lets you type your username. It is optional. If you do, the server stores your username, a random id kept in your browser, when you first and last visited, on which days, how many sessions, and whether you asked not to be contacted. Only the person running this site can see it. They use it for the same monitoring (how many players use the map and how often they return) and, unless you ticked “Don’t contact me for feedback”, may send you an in-game mail asking what you think. Usernames are typed in by visitors and are not verified. You can change your choice or remove yourself at any time under Menu → Me → Privacy, and “Clear my data” removes you as well.

Events

The Events tab shows server status and recent town and nation changes from the official map and public API, plus news from EarthMC’s own blog. Events announced elsewhere (for example on Discord) are added by hand by whoever runs this site, so they can be missing or late.

Controls

W A S D or the arrow keys move the map, Shift zooms in, Space zooms out, H goes home and / or Ctrl+K focuses search, L finds you and ? lists every shortcut.

Open source

This map is free and open source (MIT license). The live site is abetterearthmcmap.nckhvlk.network and the code is on GitHub. You can read exactly what it does, report problems, or suggest changes there. It is not affiliated with EarthMC.

Concerns

If you are EarthMC staff or a player and something here does not sit right with you, tell whoever runs this site (see the feedback page). Anything that goes against the principles above will be changed or removed.
